Amalgam vs composite fillings

Amalgam Fillings

Low-cost amalgam fillings, along with composite (tooth-colored) fillings, are the most widely used filling materials used today. An amalgam filling is more commonly used in the back teeth since the color is less visually appealing than a composite filling. As with most dental restorations, amalgam fillings are not permanent and may someday need replacement, however, they are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long-lasting smile.

Composite Fillings

The common silver filling contains mercury. Our practice recommends the highest-quality biocompatible, tooth-colored filling materials to create healthy, beautiful smile restorations. Since the composite material adheres directly to the tooth enamel, less preparation of the tooth is required before using it than with traditional amalgam. This means it is more durable and provides a more natural-looking result.

Fixed Bridges

If a tooth or teeth are too damaged to have a crown applied, a porcelain bridge may be a good alternative. Designed to bridge the gap between one or more missing teeth, a bridge anchors to the neighboring natural teeth or dental implants. The fixed bridge is a good upgrade from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance that restores your smile, gives support to the face, and restores speaking and chewing function.

Inlays and Onlays

Dr. Gibson strives to conserve your own healthy tooth structure whenever possible. For those who have worn or cracked teeth, or who have large silver fillings, Dr. Gibson recommends porcelain inlays. The porcelain bonds directly to the tooth enamel which means it is both durable and beautiful. An onlay is used when the tooth structure may be compromised by the use of a crown. Ask us about a free consultation if you feel you may need an onlay or an inlay.

Root Canals

Root canal therapy is an excellent way to save a tooth that would otherwise die and need to be removed. All teeth that have had root canal therapy must be protected with a crown. This is because teeth that have had the pulp removed are more susceptible to fracture. LEARN MORE
